Juilliard and New Chamber Orchestra

The Juilliard School

The Juilliard School
From 1930-32 Herrmann attended the Juilliard School of Music, then located at 122nd Street and Broadway.

When Lincoln Center opened in 1965, the Juilliard School moved out of this building, which was then taken over by its current occupant, the Manhattan School of Music.

One of Bernard Herrmann’s most significant early appearances was conducting the first concert of the New Chamber Orchestra on May 17, 1933.

The concert took place at the New School, then just barely a year old. The architect was Joseph Urban, known for his opulent Ziegfeld Follies shows and over 50 Metropolitan Opera productions. The New School was his last building. Today it is a protected landmark.

New Chamber Orchestra
This is the program for the premiere concert of the New Chamber Orchestra. Though dated May 10, the concert actually took place on May 17, due to the death of Herrmann’s father. Many associates of Herrmann were involved with the concert, including Henry Cowell, Percy Grainger, Charles Ives, Philip James, Jerome Moross, and others.

Johnny Green attended this concert, which probably led to his getting Herrmann hired at CBS several weeks later.
